Scholarship Description:

The George A. “Doc” Lopez, MD, Laboratory for Regenerative Cell Therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), affiliated with Harvard Medical School, is seeking motivated postdoctoral candidates.

In 2018, the Department of Neurosurgery at MGH and the Laboratory of Molecular Neurobiology at McLean Hospital completed the world’s first FDA-approved autologous hiPSC-differentiated dopamine precursor cell implantation for Parkinson’s disease treatment (N Engl J Med. 2020; 382:20 1926-1932).

In 2023, the Lopez Laboratory was established to support ongoing and future clinical trials for Parkinson’s disease (NCT06687837) and to develop next-generation cell production methods and novel therapies.

The lab also investigates disease mechanisms to develop new therapies, focusing on transformative applications for Parkinson’s and related neurodegenerative diseases. It includes a GMP facility for producing clinical-grade cells and a neurobiology lab for preclinical research.

The lab is co-directed by Scientific Director Bin Song, MD, PhD, and Clinical Director Jeffrey Schweitzer, MD, PhD, from the Departments of Neurosurgery at Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School.

Available Subjects:

  • The Laboratory is now recruiting for 2 postdoctoral fellows. Candidate qualifications should include a PhD or MD degree in a relevant field such as neuroscience, stem cell biology, gene editing, immunology, etc.; evidence of scholarly achievement including relevant publications, and grounding in clinical medicine or other biological or medical backgrounds is preferred

Eligibility criteria:

  • 1. Experience in stem cell culture and neuron differentiation
  • 2. Experience in neurodegenerative disease animal models, neural circuit analysis, optogenetics, chemical genetics, or electrophysiology
  • 3. Experience in gene editing, molecular biology
  • 4. Experience in immunology
  • 5. Teamwork spirit and communication skills
